Wow! Truly the best virtual event I have been apart of in the past 14 months. While Covid is keeping us all apart, I think we can all say how lucky we all were tonight to be surrounded by so much exceptional talent that we likely never would have seen otherwise, even in a live format! A round of applause to all of the performers and the planning committee who made tonight possible – it was a magical night supporting YWS!

Thank you for joining us last night for our first-ever virtual Cover Me Urban event “Under Your Roof”! We hope you enjoyed our showcase of Canadian talent and learned a bit more about the wonderful work that is done at YWS to help homeless youth stay safe and reach their potential.

The City of Toronto is one of the wealthiest cities in the world. Nonetheless, we have the largest homeless population in Canada. Up to 40,000 youth face homelessness across Canada with 6,000 – 7,000 seeking a safe place to be sheltered tonight. Up to 2,000 of those youth are from Toronto.
Located in the community of North Etobicoke, YWS provides a safe refuge for youth who – often through circumstances beyond their control – have found themselves without a home to call their own. Demand for our services is increasing. Youth make up the fastest-growing population of homeless people in Canada, and their needs are changing, requiring longer stays and deeper support. The longer youth remain homeless, the greater the negative outcomes. Early intervention is key.
Our goal here at YWS is to empower youth facing homelessness to reach their individual potential. With the help of our community, we aim to end youth homelessness, one youth at a time, one step at a time.
JOIN US UNDER YOUR ROOF
Join us for a virtual celebration in support of Youth Without Shelter and the up to 2,000 youth experiencing homelessness each night in Toronto. Learn about the realities of youth homelessness, hear success stories from lived voices, and watch performances from special guests and celebrity supporters.
Presented by Hudbay Minerals and Scotiabank and hosted by Canadian actor and comedian Ennis Esmer, Under Your Roof is the virtual embodiment of Cover Me Urban, our annual fundraiser for Youth Without Shelter.
Through a free livestream, Under Your Roof will feature incredible performances by celebrity guests such as:
- The Tenors
- Wali Shah
- Owen Barney
- Molly Johnson
as well as appearances by surprise celebrity guests and more!
All proceeds will go directly towards the YWS programs and wrap-around support services as we fight to end youth homelessness.
UNDER OUR ROOF
With up to 2,000 youth experiencing homelessness each night within the city of Toronto, it can be extremely difficult for youth to find s safe place to sleep. Before the pandemic, youth shelters within Ontario were at 97% occupancy. Since March of last year, the challenges to find safe shelter have only increased, leaving many youth with nowhere to turn.
Here at Youth Without Shelter, we provide a safe refuge for youth ages 16 to 24. The absolute basic costs needed for a youth to stay with us for one night, in a safe, warm bed, is only $25. Whether a youth stays a few days, a few months or longer, YWS is committed to helping all of our residents transition from homelessness into independent, stable living
To support our youth through our virtual event, “Under Your Roof”, we are aiming to raise funds to cover the basic costs to house as many youth as possible for an entire year at YWS. For one youth that would be $9,125.
Leading up to our event, and during the event on May 27, you can donate to “Under Our Roof”. For every $9,125 raised, YWS will be able to provide 1 youth with safe housing and wrap-around supports for one full year.
SILENT AUCTION
On May 13 at 9:00am EST our Under Your Roof auction will be open for bidding and will close May 27 at 9:30pm EST.
This year’s auction items include fabulous experiences such as a 5-Day African Safari Adventure in Tanzania! Plan a round of golf at the beautiful Taboo Golf Course in Muskoka. Head to Niagara-On-The-Lake for wine tasting or the “Savour The Sights” culinary experience at Jackson Triggs Winery. Enjoy a VIP Card from Cineplex providing you and a guest to unlimited movie admission for one year at any Cineplex location in Canada. All proceeds will directly benefit wrap-around programs and services at Youth Without Shelter.

Since our founding over 30 years ago, YWS has developed a model of care that identifies and builds on our clients’ strengths and resiliency. We do this by providing them with opportunities to develop their confidence and key skills they’ll need to navigate life and overcome challenges. We don’t just provide a warm bed for a night; we offer practical advice and guidance from trained staff, wrap-around support programs, and a safe, comfortable home. Our goal is to move young people out of homelessness, towards independent, stable living.
